How to rip CDs to FLAC on Mac

A CD is still one of the best ways to own music: a lossless master you bought once, with no license server that can take it back. Ripping it to FLAC turns that shelf of jewel cases into a library you can carry, back up, and play on anything — at exactly the same quality as the disc.
Why FLAC and not MP3 (or just leaving them as CDs)
FLAC is a lossless codec: it compresses the audio the way ZIP compresses a document, and decompresses to the identical bits. A rip to FLAC is a perfect copy of the disc at roughly half the size of raw CD audio. MP3 and AAC are lossy — smaller, but they permanently discard audio information, and you can never get it back from the file.
The practical rule: archive in FLAC, convert outward when needed. Once you have a lossless master, you can generate MP3s for a car stereo or a small SD card any time. Rip to MP3 first and you've capped the quality of your collection forever. (More on the trade-offs in FLAC vs ALAC vs MP3.)
What you need
- A CD drive. Any USB drive works — the Apple SuperDrive, or a $25 generic USB drive from any electronics shop. Macs have read CDs over USB forever; nothing exotic required.
- Ripping software.Apple's Music app can import CDs but pushes you toward ALAC/AAC and its own library format. Dedicated tools like XLD are powerful but manual — you'll be fetching metadata and filing folders yourself. - Disk space. Budget roughly 300–400 MB per album in FLAC. A 500-disc collection fits comfortably on a 250 GB drive.
Step by step
1. Insert the disc and let it be identified
Good ripping software reads the disc's table of contents — the exact lengths and layout of its tracks — and looks it up on MusicBrainz, the open music database. This is how a blank silver disc becomes "Daft Punk — Discovery, 2001" without you typing anything. When several pressings match, pick the one whose year, label, and country match your copy. If your disc is obscure enough that nobody has catalogued it, enter the details manually once — you're contributing to your own library's accuracy either way.
2. Review the metadata before ripping
Thirty seconds of review saves an hour of retagging. Check the artist credit (especially on compilations), the year (original release vs remaster), and the track titles. In Diskoteca this review screen is part of the rip flow — every field is editable before the drive starts reading.
3. Rip
A clean disc rips in a few minutes. The output should land already tagged, with artwork embedded, in a sensible folder layout like Artist/Album/01 Title.flac— if your tool leaves you a pile of files to organize afterwards, it's only doing half the job.
4. Deal honestly with damaged discs
Scratched discs produce read errors on specific tracks, not vague overall failure. The right behaviour is per-track reporting: eleven of thirteen tracks ripped means eleven good files in your library and two named failures you can retry — after cleaning the disc or with a different drive, which often reads marginal discs better. Distrust any tool that reports success on a disc that skipped.
After the rip
Two habits keep a growing rip project sane. First, duplicate detection: by disc two hundred you will re-rip something you forgot. Acoustic fingerprinting (Diskoteca uses Chromaprint) catches identical recordings even when the tags differ.
